Dave Shaffer

Dave believes strongly in delivering quality service each and every time and has proven this in his seven years as CEO of Interphase, and eight years of service as a Grand Rapids City Commissioner. Dave led our City through periods of extreme growth and worked tirelessly to change the culture to focus on customer’s needs with consistent service delivery and feedback loops to ensure task and projects were completed. As a founding member of the Westside Corridor Improvement Authority, Chair of the Board of Zoning Appeals and member of Grand Rapid’s Economic Development Corporation, Dave brings a wealth of expertise and knowledge in developing and leading teams that focus on and produce long term results. Dave is currently the CEO of Interphase Interiors, a Best in Class Haworth furniture dealership.

Johnny Brann Jr.

Johnny Brann Jr. is an entrepreneur from the City of Grand Rapids. He currently owns Kitchen 67, Brann’s Restaurants, Woodrow’s Duckpin Bowling, and Interphase Interiors. He is dedicated to being involved in the West Michigan community and is proud to serve as a member in various “high impact” boards. His work combines his passions of the service industry, community effect and entrepreneurship.

Nicole Durga, Mary Free Bed At Home

Nicole Durga is as Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) utilizing assessment, planning and implementation skills for strategy development, process improvement, quality assurance, retention solutions, and learning & development innovation to drive outcomes in the ever-evolving healthcare sector. Nicole is the Regional Outcomes Director for Mary Free Bed at Home.

Martha Arias Salazar & Mercedes Lopez Duran

Mercedes Lopez Duran is the founder and owner of El Granjero Mexican Grill. Originally from Mexico City, Mercedes arrived in Grand Rapids in 2005. With some years of experience in the restaurant industry, she took over Tacos El Ganadero on Bridge Street in 2007. With a fresh look and new menu, El Granjero specializes in making dishes Mexico City style such as Tlacoyos, Nopales, and El Molcajete. El Granjero has received many recognitions including 2017 Hispanic Business of the Year by the Hispanic Chamber and 2022 Neighborhood Business Award by Steepletown. 

Martha Arias Salazar is the founder of Tamales El Kora, specializing in food from Nayarit, Mexico. After closing the location due to the pandemic, Martha and Mercedes partnered to open the newest addition to the Westside. Mercadito is a street-food inspired concept serving snacks and desserts from different parts of Mexico including elotes, mangonada and for the first time in Grand Rapids, Marquesitas! 

Al Vanderberg serves as County Administrator/Controller of Kent County, MI since August 2021. Previously Al served as County Administrator of Ottawa County, MI; Deputy County Administrator/Controller of Kent County, MI; City Manager of South Haven, MI; and Assistant City Manager of Greenville, MI. Al earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan and Master of Public Administration Degree from Michigan State University.

Lisa Posthumus Lyons is a life-long resident of Kent County where she is serving in her second term as County Clerk/Register of Deeds. Prior to her election as Clerk/Register, Lisa served as state Representative for the 86th District, representing portions of Kent and Ionia Counties in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2011 through 2016.  A strong voice for our West Michigan values, Lisa’s worked to successfully reform and modernize government, making it more accessible for those she serves. A graduate of Michigan State University, Lisa and her husband Brad were Lowell High School sweethearts and are raising their four children on the family’s fourth generation farm in Alto.

The West Side community cleanup started as a grassroots effort in 2009 when a pair of West Side residents got together with their neighbors. Every year since, the community has banded together to help cleanup our streets, parks, and alleyways. Organized by the West Grand Neighborhood Organization will host the 2022 West Side Cleanup on Saturday, April 23, 2022. See you there!

World of Winter

The World of Winter Festival takes advantage of Michigan’s cold climate to provide interesting ways for people to experience and enjoy the season. This Festival aspires is to make Grand Rapids a more active winter city - which makes Grand Rapids a more active year-round city. All programming and activities are FREE, socially-distanced for these pandemic times and geared for both families and adults. World of Winter is organized by Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. (DGRI), the City of Grand Rapids and numerous community partners.

The monthly meeting of our West Side Corridor Improvement Authority, led by President Dave Schafer.

What is the West Side CIA Board? The Board prepares an analysis of economic changes in the development area and studies the impact of metropolitan growth. Plans and proposes the construction, renovation, repair, etc. of any unit that aids the economic growth of the Corridor. The Board consists of the chief executive officer of the municipality or his or her assignee and nine (9) members as determined by the governing body of the municipality. Not less than a majority of the members shall be persons having an ownership or business interest in property located in the development area. At least 1 of the members shall be a resident of the development area or of an area within 1/2 mile of any part of the development area and have the ability to analyze economic development projects.
